I have worked as a freelance illustrator for well over twenty years. Firstly in editorial and design illustration (working for advertising agencies and newspapers) and currently in Book Publishing plus some other avenues. I am represented by Jodie Hodges at United Agents. Over the years, I have seen pretty much every type of illustration-y commission fly across my desk, perhaps with a couple of exceptions. I learned a lot about business (often the hard way) and to my great surprise and despite myself, I now actually enjoy the combo of being an artist in business.
I offer a confidential and affordable illustration mentoring service for Illustrators at any stage of their career. These can be one-offs or we can work together over a longer period of time. I love working with illustrators over a longer period of time. I now offer a block booking as continuity, consistency and accountability really does bring the results and you will see how far you have come in a short time,
Why ? Basically, I want to save you time…
Learning as you go/ on the job takes time, with my help and support and your time and investment, I want to help fast-track you (it will still take some time!). I’m very aware that many Illustrators (including myself), leave a fantastic undergraduate illustration program with brilliant styles but without the tools or business mindset for running a creative freelance solo business. It’s painful to watch…so I want to help resource you to construct a sustainable career and build something really creative and beautiful.
SO…
Is this you?
1. You want to be an Illustrator. This is the dream, you love drawing and making things, but you don’t know where to start? You’re a graduate, you’re not a graduate? No problem. We can look at your portfolio or if you don’t have a portfolio, we will look at building one. I will see where your work may fit commercially and how we can build on what you have already.
I offer friendly, honest, critical (but kind), constructive feedback, advice and art direction to help you curate the very best portfolio.
2. You are already working professionally. You’re a pro, great! But maybe you’re stuck in the sausage factory, perhaps you’ve been pigeon-holed and you seem to be drawing dinosaurs every single day. You need to change-up your portfolio and get back to the work you want to do, the stuff that excites you. We can review everything and I can help you play to your strengths and see where we can build and what needs to be let go.
3. You’ve been offered representation from an agent. Wonderful, Congrats. But as with any business arrangement, proceed with caution and read the small print! The relationship between yourself and your agent is (or should be) an important one, they will be responsible for how/when you get paid and how much! This is an important decision and not one to be made quickly, there are things to consider. I am very happy to talk through the decision with you, and we can also take a look at the agreement.
4. Troubleshooting- You’ve got a business illustration problem or a question about how much to charge, the rights – copyright etc etc. You have been staring at a piece for months and really can’t see it anymore- jump on a check-in call and I will have a look at it with fresh eyes and offer you some input and we can talk it through together.
Please note: All work and situations discussed during our sessions will be treated as strictly private and confidential between us.
I offer blocks of mentoring sessions, short to longer-term.
£150 for 3 monthly sessions. 1 hour each. 1 per month. Great for continuity and accountability, and I will throw in a free check-in each month.
£300 for 6 monthly sessions. 1 hour each. 1 per month - work with me for a longer term, bi-weekly check-in for 30 mins, plus 1 hour mentoring each month.
“The six month mentorship with Sarah Horne was excellent for my artistic development and great value for money given the amount of individual feedback I received. Sarah provided specific feedback on individual pieces and comprehensive advice on career development - both of which were invaluable. Her positive attitude and our regular monthly or bi-monthly meetings were great for motivation and productivity. I now feel confident to tackle client work and indeed began my first client project during the last month of the mentorship - a challenge I felt ready to tackle thanks to the practice briefs Sarah provided. Thanks Sarah for a positive and productive six months!” - CHANTELLE HOLT.
